Timeless

Red Telephone Boxes in London Humanity, shared, is wanting to be heard and understood. And so, at great risk, we artists create our art. I wanted to use the colour red and see how it came out with a minimal colour palette and to highlight the theme of connection and communication. It is so often underestimated how important are both of these and we ignore the messages at our peril. What better reminder than London's iconic and totally famous red telephone boxes to make an instant connection. This piece took several days to complete and has over 30 different layers and textures.

Crackly Underground

Collage Art grunge - Underground. I love taking photos in the Underground. It's such a challenge. If I decide I want minimal people in my composition I have to wait and bide my time - and not be in the way. The really fun part is turning the initial photo into artwork with textures, choosing the mood and the palette to covey the story, crackling with energy.

Downtown

TD Centre, Downtown Toronto This composition used my photographs of the TD Centre in Toronto's Downtown Core, with pencil sketch, painterly effects, masks and grunge textures. As an artist who loves clear straight lines and deep perspective it was a little unnerving allowing more flow and movement,however it is a testament to letting the art flow in the direction it wants to, and a reminder that life is never all straight lines and often we have to flow as best we can. Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge, London London, beautiful London. There are few things more awe-inspiring than seeing Tower Bridge open to let boats through. Harry and I happened to be there just at the right time and actually saw it open and I could not believe my luck. I brought it into my textured collage art painting blending it along with other memories of London that year, including the grounds of the Tower of London and I can still remember the feelings I had when Tower Bridge opened. I hope you enjoy this as it's one of my fondest - and most intricate art works. You can find it on Nickyjamesonart in a variety of sizes and it looks extra great on canvas.

Toronto - Cityscape

Toronto Skyline Cityscape is another in my skyline series, this time using bright colours, textures and background. I took the original photo from Toronto islands and first of all gave it a painterly treatment before applying the textures.

Faces

Faces and Stories Collage Something a little different because it's always good to try something different from time to time. Something that requires a different thought pattern isn't necessarily easier however it is often just as enthralling an adventure. My inspiration for thiscollage piece includes music.

Fearless

Union Flag. With this composition I overlaid my photographs along with several brushes, stamps and artsy elements and very grungy textures and masking. This was surprisingly tricky to do because only certain colours would work with the red, white and blue palette. I wanted one strong, recognizable photograph for the centre, and if you look carefully you will see several other famous London landmarks.

London - Regency

Continuing my Urban London Series this composition is called Closer - London Regency and is a photo artistic creation of London's Regent Street not far from Piccadilly Circus. As always I started with my photograph and chose the textures and blending to complement and show off the beautifully Regency architecture. So often today we walk along, looking down (usually at our devices) and never pause to deliberately look up. In pausing and looking up it's possible to see a completely different world, appreciating that every inch is telling a new and different story.

A Sense of Time

London- Urban Stories. This composition has around 30 different layers, including five of my photographs which I duplicated and set at different opacities. In this art piece you can see Westminster Palace (I was standing on Westminster Bridge to take it), Big Ben, St Paul's Cathedral, Somerset House, and London's signature red telephone boxes which I took in Lincoln's in Fields. I was lucky to have an almost perfect shot of a London Black Taxi - unobstructed for a change! I love to include the Union flag (or as it's also called, the Union Jack) just to add that little touch of recognizable UK. I love to work with these artsy plaster backgrounds... along with the paint the roughness complements the grungy and somewhat nostalgic direction in which the work took me. Also this is part of a series. At first I thought this piece wasn't going to come together. Sometimes it takes a few versions or tries to get what I am looking for. I always feel that little sigh of relief when I feel it start "happening" in the scene...

Westminster - I

Westminster with Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, Red London Bus and Black Cab. Standing tall, standing strong.

London Study I

A study of London Architectural treated to watercolour stains. How many can you spot. I tend to like dark backgrounds in general however this one went in a very different direction, with key colours of red, white and blue and postmarked script. I think I'd like to do a series of these. This composition will look great on canvas to take advantage of the textures. Whatever medium you choose it's one of kind and will look smashing, always with lots of detail to see. It's available as a 24 x 24 print.

Ancient and Modern II - London

Juxtaposition - Tower Bridge, London Assembly Building This is a composition I did as a project to represent juxtaposition. It was particularly challenging because juxtaposition has to have context and be somewhat recognizable and at the same time be a bit odd. To make this composition I combined several of my photos and used blending modes, masks, paint elements, brushes and some vintage to contrast the old Tower Bridge and the very modern London Assembly Building. I extracted the people from another of my London photographs. I chose the colour palette to give a "spacey" feel to the composition. Plenty to see, enjoy the view.

London's Ephemera

Red, white and blue in a very British scene recalling all the emotions that come with experiences and memories of home and nostalgia. I took the photos of St Paul's Cathedral and London telephone boxes at different times, created a composition, then made it the centre of a new composition blended with textures, paint and elements.

Temple

Abstract rendition of architecture, Temple, London, England. Temple is an area of central London, near Temple Church and it's one of the main legal districts of London and a very noted centre for English Law historically and present day. For this composite I wanted to play on the magnificent architecture so blended several of the photographs I took here. I ended up using around eight different photographs and duplicates of my photographs and textures and elements for light and (unexpected in this case) visual interest. Take your time and look and see...

Beating Heart

Beautiful UK flags and Cross of St George flag in the ceiling in Leadenhall Market, London, England. I was wandering through London on one of my many walks and quite unexpectedly encountered hundreds of flags in the beautiful ceiling in the Leadenhall Market, the Union Jack and the Cross of St George, all strung out like fairy lights. It was quite breathtaking, however as always it's never enough for me to just take the photo, I have to create art from it. That meant waiting for quite some time until I found the perfect way to express this particular beauty. To make this composition I blended two of my photographs - one of the flags in Leadenhall Market the other of Covent Garden Market. Then I used several masking techniques, paint, brushwork and textures to create the piece. There are 18 layers (approx) in this piece. I actually started it a few weeks ago and left it until I was "feeling it" a few weeks later. Then I felt the movement and flow and knew just where I wanted each piece and layer. FlatIron Lights

Toronto's Flatiron Building at Church and Wellington is one of the most photographed buildings in the city. It also pre-dates New York's Flatiron Building. it represents an enduring part of Toronto's historic architecture, which is ever more critical with the rapid pace of urban development in the city. A Cheer of Colour - The Arts Market, Leslieville

I love taking something ordinary and creating something that's never been created (except in my mind) and placing it into a fantastical framework that evolves as I work with the idea. The Arts Market, Leslieville is where I have my gallery. I share the space with many other creative souls, all extremely talented artisans. As local artists we share the same space... and also many of the same struggles in getting our hand-made creations seen and purchased, but like the bright colours of this composition we shine brightly because our art drives us and we must answer the call. This artwork stands on its own; it's also a celebration of the artists and the valuable presence of the Arts Market as a cornerstone for local Artists in Leslieville. Spattered Skyline

Toronto Skyline looking East with CN Tower, railway lines and architecture leading lines, composite artwork. There is more than one way to see (or create) a Skyline. You're probably familiar with seeing Toronto's skyline from the water, or the Islands. My latest urban grunge artwork takes on the CN Tower and an alternative view of the Toronto skyline. Composed of 4 of my photos and various layers, brushes, blend modes and filters the sketch technique just seemed to draw out all the lines and the perspective in the way I wanted. I took the photos back in February standing on a footbridge looking East...and I had to be far enough away from the CN Tower to get all of its height yet also get detail in the buildings. To get the extended skyline I duplicated, flipped and masked the same photo from a different angle from a different angle, adding blending and layers to add some interest to the sky. In an almost monotone art piece, a splash of red splatters the urban landscape...

The Drake Hotel

The Drake Hotel, Queen Street West, Toronto Queen Street West is one of Toronto's most eclectic neighbourhoods . In the early days of The Drake Hotel however the Queen St West neighghbourhood had fallen on hard times. One day I happened to be standing across from "The Drake" as it's often called. I thought it was curiously modern for this part of Toronto (it was opened in the early 1900's). I wanted to do something a bit different with it, however it took me a long time to decide what exactly would tell the story I wanted to tell. Months later, I had it - I would give it a "back in time" almost collage treatment and feel, but retain the modern glass front for the Drake so it's a bit of a contradiction. I lost count of the number of layers and textures, all I can say is each one is placed with thought and feeling.

The Return

History and architecture, blended with famous landmarks of the City of London. Every element represents a feeling, a connection, a thought. More appears, seemingly as you look, and in the distance a flash of red....

Walking Up Rose Street

Walking Up Rose St. On Rose Street in London's Covent Garden, can be found one of London's Oldest Pubs, the Lamb and Flag. My composites almost always contain photos that have some particular meaning to me. In this case I used to work near Rose Street (round the corner in Covent Garden) and the clock comes from outside the the building in which I used to work years ago. Brings back memories.

Orchestral Moves... In the Dark

A study in lines and tones. Composite a few of my photos, primarily the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden and the back of flats over looking a very lovely hidden garden. I imagine the music would raise the roof... or just take over. And maybe if we climb upwards we can the beautiful music that sustains us.

Time for Reflection

After a beautiful Summer the next best thing is a bright and beautiful Fall day. Many of such days can be enjoyed in Urban Toronto down on the Waterfront, with bright blue skies and huge fluffy, scudding clouds taking their time floating across the sky. Enough time for me to get them reflected in the almost perfectly still water. Brightness to make you happy when Winter skies are grey.

Musical

Luxuriously warm, gold, russets and greens adorn Toronto's famous music garden in Autumn, a last hurrah before the colours sleep for winter. It's such a beautiful, peaceful and musical place to be.
